Thirupaavai Paasuram #29

As the Margazhi Nonbu nears its completion, Andal shows us the right path to Moksha. In Paasuram #29, she asks Bhagwan Krishna to be their beloved God forever and of all the blessings that he showers on them, the most important one should be that they remain HIS devotees. Actually she is asking him to remove their longing for everything else and leave them with just his devotion. The true path to Moksha is losing yourself in the whole …..

As always do read Thirupaavai Paasuram #28 before reading Paasuram #29.

English Translation

Paasuram #29 is almost the culmination of a month long Nonbu… and Andal says “O Krishna, we have come early in the morning to touch your golden lotus feet and get your blessings. Do listen to the reason why. Just like you, we are born in the cowherd community and make a living by taking cows to graze. So please don’t miss our small Nonbu (fasting ritual). This Nonbu is not only to receive some material gifts from you, but to ensure that for all our lives, you should be born in our cow herding community and we should be related. Bless us so that we remain devoted to you and please destroy all our other desires.”

All the vedas, upanishads, mystics and every enlightened Master has tried to tell us the same thing …. drop your desires and merge with the whole. My understanding is limited so I will share this quote of Osho’s. Maybe this communicates the message.

Paasuram #29 Osho on Desires

This is precisely what Andal is asking Krishna – transform my desires into devotion to you. Am having goosebumps just getting that insight. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฟ

Note

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
