Thirupaavai Paasuram #28

No wonder we worship Andal as one of the 12 Azhwars. Her Thirupaavai Paasurams look innocuous and simple, that speak of everyday chores, rituals, food etc but the deeper meaning just blows your mind. Paasuram #28 is no exception. After 27 days of doing the Margazhi Nonbu, Andal says, we are simple cowherds who know nothing much about rituals. :):) The message is, Bhagwan Krishna isn’t interested in your rituals – he is only looking at the depth of your devotion and surrender.

Karavaikal pinsendru gaanam – Paasuram #28

கறவைகள் பின்சென்று கானம் சேர்ந்துண்போம்
அறிவொன்றும் இல்லாத ஆயர்குலத்து உன்றன்னை
பிறவி பெறுந்தனை புண்ணியம் யாமுடையோம்
குறைவொன்றும் இல்லாத கோவிந்தா! உன்தன்னோடு
உறவேல் நமக்கிங்கு ஒழிக்க ஒழியாது
அறியாத பிள்ளைகளோம் அன்பினால் உன்தன்னை
சிறுபேர் அழைத்தனவும் சீறி யருளாதே
இறைவா! நீ தாராய் பறையேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Tamil Translation

குறையே இல்லாத கோவிந்தனே! நாங்கள் பசுக்களின் பின்னால் சென்று அவற்றை மேய்த்து, தயிர்ச்சாதம் உண்பவர்கள். எங்களுக்கு அறிவென்பதே இல்லை. ஆனால், ஒன்றே ஒன்று மட்டும் எங்களுக்குத் தெரியும். உன்னை தலைவனாக அடைந்ததால் எங்களுக்கு வைகுந்தம் உறுதியென்பதை பிறவிப்பயனாக அடைந்திருக்கிறோம் என்பதே அது. உன்னோடு எங்களுக்குள்ள உறவைப் பிரிக்க யாராலும் முடியாது. விரதம் இருக்கும் முறை பற்றியெல்லாம் அறியாத பிள்ளைகள் நாங்கள்! அதுபோல் கண்ணா! மணிவண்ணா! கருணாகரா! என்றெல்லாம் உன்னிடமுள்ள உரிமையின் காரணமாக ஒருமையில் அழைத்தோம். அதற்காக கோபித்துக் கொள்ளாதே. எங்கள் இறைவனே! எங்கள் நோன்பை ஏற்று அருள் தருவாயாக.

English Translation

Andal calls herself and her friends as simple curd rice eating cowherds ! She says, they have no clue about the Nonbu and the rules etc. They just know that Bhagwan Krishna is their leader and their place in Vaikuntam (Vishnu’s abode) is secure because of their devotion to Krishna.

An important truth conveyed through a beautifully simple Paasuram. Bhagwan Krishna is not looking at how well you perform the rituals !!! He is looking for your devotion, love and trust, nothing else matters.

Just yesterday while walking, I was listening to discourse #9 from The Beloved – Vol #2, the series of discourses given by Osho on The Baul mystics. Here are the opening lines – call it coincidence, but Osho’s explanation is exactly the explanation for Paasuram #28.

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
