Thirupaavai Paasuram #23

In Paasuram #23 Andal speaks of how we keep asking God for all sorts of things – a bigger house, a better car and a fat bank balance …while we should really be asking for Moksha, for merging into HIM. What a beautiful Paasuram.

Maari Malaimuzhanchil – Paasuram #23

மாரி மலைமுழஞ்சில் மன்னிக்கிடத்துறங்கும்
சீரிய சிங்கம் அறிவுற்றுத் தீவிழித்து
வேரி மயிர்பொங்க எப்பாடும் பேர்ந்துதறி
மூரி நிமிர்ந்து முழங்கப் புறப்பட்டு
போதருமா போலே நீ பூவைப்பூ வண்ணா! உன்
கோயில் நின்று இங்ஙனே போந்தருளி கோப்புடைய
சீரிய சிங்கா சனத்திருந்து யாம்வந்த
காரியம் ஆராய்ந்து அருளேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Tamil Translation

மழைக்காலத்தில் மலையிலுள்ள குகையில் உறங்கும் பெருமை மிக்க சிங்கம் விழிக்கிறது. அதன் கண்களில் நெருப்பு பொறி பறக்கிறது. நாற்புறமும் நடமாடி பிடரி மயிரை சிலிர்த்து, பெருமையுடன் நிமிர்ந்து கர்ஜனையுடன் வெளியே கிளம்புகிறது. அதுபோல, காயாம்பூ நிறத்தையுடைய கண்ணனே! நீயும் வீரநடை போட்டு உன் கோயிலில் இருந்து வெளியேறி, இங்கே வந்து அருள் செய். வேலைப்பாடுகளைக் கொண்ட மிகச்சிறந்த சிம்மாசனத்தில் அமர்ந்து, நாங்கள் எதற்காக இங்கே வந்தோம் என்பதை அறிந்து, அந்த கோரிக்கைகளைப் பரிசீலனை செய்து நிறைவேற்றி அருள வேண்டுகிறோம்.

English Translation

Andal says, “Just like the Lion that takes shelter in a cave when it rains and walks out majestically, shaking its mane, O Krishna, Please come out and give us darshan”. She goes on to say that all of us have come with different requests and wishes, please grant our wishes only if they are worthy.

Paasuram #23 speaks of another beautiful aspect of spiritual growth. We shouldn’t be asking for simple worldly things like a house, car, jewels etc.. for those mean nothing. Ask for Moksha, for merging with the whole, like Andal and her friends do in this Paasuram.

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
