Not sure if they teach Kabir’s dohas (couplets) in schools these days. We had them in every class and this Doha has always remained with me .. I have not tried to memorise it but it has just stuck with me –
काल करे सो आज कर, आज करे सो अब। पल में परलय होएगी, बहुरि करेगा कब।।
Kaal Kare so aaj kar, aaj kare so ab | Pal me parlay hoyegi, bahuri karega kab ||
Meaning – That which you need to do tomorrow, do it today, and that which you need to do today, do it right away. In a minute things would change and there will be no time to get things done.
Basically Sant Kabir says we have very limited time, so don’t keep postponing or procrastinating. You never know when things change. “Parlay” can be translated as tempest or a cataclysmic event. So a cataclysmic event might happen any minute and then you would have no time to get things done.
Well, am married to someone who totally believes in this couplet and yesterday, it came true !!!
GRAP 3 got implemented all of a sudden. The AQI shot up to 500+ and the government immediately brought in GRAP 3 … which meant all construction activities are to be stopped. Read about GRAP 3 – Delhi gasps as air quality remains hazardous; govt tightens Grap III curbs.
Just a day before that on Friday, we started fixing tiles on both the balconies as the downstairs neighbour was having seepage due to cracks in our flooring. Originally the work was to have started on Thursday, but the tiles couldn’t get delivered. So we started on Friday and completed 70% of the work.
Yesterday Jyoti’s team had to take back all the equipment and just cleaned up the place as they were not allowed to work. The tiles have to be cut and dust will be released into the air. GRAP 3 doesn’t allow that. Now we need to wait till the GRAP 3 is downgraded to 2 or 1 before completing the work.
Momentarily Krishnan and I felt sad, but then, there is no point in worrying about something that’s totally out of our scope of control. We just have to wait it out. The air quality has deteriorated and if news is to be believed, the stubble burning is happening with renewed vigour in Punjab. They have allegedly figured out when the NASA satellites are turned towards Punjab, and are burning the stubble at a different time. Unfortunately for them Korean satellites have picked up the smoke :(.
It’s terribly sad that the farmers don’t want to think about fellow citizens of Delhi. Just see this FB post from Kiran KS. This is the truth !!!
How I wish we had started the work on Thursday… we would have been having tea in the newly tiled balcony ! Well, maybe not, given the level of pollution.
This is one problem that needs to be fixed ASAP. It’s playing with people’s health.
