Thirupaavai Paasuram #9

Paasuram #9 has been written by Andal with the modern man in mind. We run after amassing material wealth, and use all the money to buy ourselves creature comforts. In the process we forget to spend time on spiritual reflection. This paasuram using Andal’s cousin as an example tells us to get off the rat race and walk the spiritual path.

Thoomani Maadathu – Paasuram #9

தூமணி மாடத்து சுற்றும் விளக்கெரிய
தூபம் கமழத் துயிலணை மேல் கண்வளரும்
மாமன் மகளே! மணிக்கதவம் தாள் திறவாய்
மாமீர்! அவளை எழுப்பீரோ? உன்மகள் தான்
ஊமையோ அன்றிச் செவிடோ, அனந்தலோ?
ஏமப்பெருந்துயில் மந்திரப்பட்டாளோ?
மாமாயன் மாதவன் வைகுந்தன் என்றென்று
நாமம் பலவும் நவின்றேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Tamil Translation

பிரகாசமான நவரத்தினங் களால் கட்டப்பட்ட மாளிகையில், சுற்றிச்சூழ விளக்கெரிய, நறுமணதிரவியம் மணம் வீச, அழகிய பஞ்சுமெத்தையில் உறங்கும் எங்கள் மாமன் மகளே! உன் வீட்டு மணிக்கதவைத் திறப்பாயாக. எங்கள் அன்பு மாமியே! அவளை நீ எழுப்பு. உன் மகளை எத்தனை நேரமாக நாங்கள் கூவி அழைக்கிறோம்! அவள் பதிலே சொல்லவில்லையே! அவள் ஊமையா? செவிடா? சோம்பல் அவளை ஆட்கொண்டு விட்டதா? அல்லது எழ முடியாதபடி ஏதாவது மந்திரத்தில் சிக்கி விட்டாளா? உடனே எழு. எங்களுடன் இணைந்து மாயங்கள் செய்பவன், மாதவத்துக்கு சொந்தக்காரன், வைகுண்டத்துக்கு அதிபதி என்றெல்லாம் அந்த நாராயணனின் திருநாமங்களைச் சொல்.

English Translation

Paasuram #9 seems to have been written with the modern men and women in mind. In this paasuram, Andal is trying to wake up a cousin who is also a friend. The cousin seems to be from a well to do family. Andal describes her gem-studded room, with lots of lamps. Her cousin’s bed seems to be finely upholstered with a thick mattress. Even the door seems to be studded with expensive pearls. Andal says to her aunt, why don’t you wake up your daughter ? All of us have been calling out to her but she still remains unmoved. Is she deaf ? or has she been given some potions to make her fall asleep ? Get her to wake up and pray to the one and only Madhavan, the Bhagwan who presides over Vaikuntam.

Andal is basically painting a picture of the well-to-do modern man used to all the creature comforts of life. He/she is unwilling to give up on their earthly riches and get onto the spiritual quest. Vaikuntam is just a way of describing the “heavenly” state of mind. For a normal person, one has to use words and describe “heaven” or “hell” or “God” just so that their interest is piqued and they also get out of the material realm.

We are so concerned with having every little comfort and spend hours trying to earn enough money to live lavishly. Andal is reminding us that this is all temporary… finding yourself and merging with the whole (Moksha) is the ultimate aim. So don’t waste time.

Note :

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
