Thirupaavai Paasuram #16

In Paasuram #16 Andal teaches us the importance and power of words and how we should use them judiciously. Words can hurt deeply and saying “no” to someone may demoralise them for a long time.

Nayakanai Nindra – Paasuram #16

நாயகனாய் நின்ற நந்தகோபனுடைய
கோயில் காப்பானே! கொடித்தோன்றும் தோரண
வாயில் காப்பானே! மணிக்கதவம் தாள்திறவாய்
ஆயர் சிறுமிய ரோமுக்கு அறைபறை
மாயன் மணிவண்ணன் நென்னனலே வாய்நேர்ந்தான்
தூயோமாய் வந்தோம் துயிலெழப் பாடுவான்
வாயால் முன்னமுன்னம் மாற்றாதே யம்மா! நீ
நேய நிலைக்கதவம் நீக்கலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Tamil Translation

எங்களுடைய தலைவனாய் இருக்கிற நந்தகோபனின் திருமாளிகையை பாதுகாக்கும் காவலனே! கொடித் தோரணம் கட்டப்பட்ட வாசல் காவலனே! ஆயர்குல சிறுமியரான எங்களுக்காக இந்த மாளிகைக் கதவைத் திறப்பாயாக. மாயச்செயல்கள் செய்பவனும், கரிய நிறத்தவனுமான கண்ணன் எங்களுக்கு ஒலியெழுப்பும் பறை (சிறு முரசு) தருவதாக நேற்றே சொல்லியிருக்கிறான். அதனைப் பெற்றுச்செல்ல நாங்கள் நீராடி வந்திருக்கிறோம். அவனைத் துயிலெழுப்பும் பாடல்களையும் பாட உள்ளோம். “அதெல்லாம் முடியாது” என உன் வாயால் முதலிலேயே சொல்லி விடாதே. மூடியுள்ள இந்த நிலைக்கதவை எங்களுக்கு திறப்பாயாக.

English Translation

Andal and her group of friends have reached Nandagopan’s (Krishna’s foster father was Nanda) house to collect all the goodies that Krishna had promised them. They urge the security guard to let them in. Andal says they have even come prepared with songs to entertain Krishna. The paasuram ends with Andal saying to the guard “don’t say no right away. please do open the gate”

Paasuram #16 is about how we shouldn’t discourage anyone. Often when our children or friends come up with some new idea or project, we immediately say it won’t work ! Hear them out, listen patiently and if you have suggestions share them with a positive intent. Words hurt, so use them judiciously.

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
