Thirupaavai Paasuram #12

Different aspects of the spiritual quest are described in each Paasuram. In Paasuram #12 it’s all about persistence and grit in the face of several challenges.

This beautiful Paasuram describes the physical difficulties that one needs to overcome in one’s spiritual quest. Andal also reminds her sleeping friend in this paasuram about the Rama Avatar of Mahavishnu and how he overcame so many difficulties to bring back Maa Sita from Lanka.

New Insight – While this Paasuram is all about perseverance and grit to overcome all the challenges on the spiritual path, I feel the other important message is about entitlement. Andal has reached the house of another friend and that friend comes from a rich family with buffaloes that are overflowing with milk even after feeding their calves. The way to her house is full of milky slush. It’s almost as if Andal is chiding her friend, that despite having these riches, you won’t attain spiritual growth without effort. We see so many children today who haven’t heard the word “no” from their parents …. a whole entitled generation will soon be in the workplace. How do we handle that ?

கனைத்திளங் கற்றெருமை கன்றுக்கு இரங்கி
நினைத்து முலைவழியே நின்றுபால் சோர
நனைத்தில்லம் சேறாக்கும் நற்செல்வன் தங்காய்!
பனித்தலை வீழ நின் வாசல் கடைபற்றி
சினத்தினால் தென் இலங்கைக் கோமானைச் செற்ற
மனத்துக்கு இனியானைப் பாடவும் நீ வாய்திறவாய்
இனித்தான் எழுந்திராய் ஈதென்ன பேருறக்கம்!
அனைத்தில்லத் தாரும் அறிந்தேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Tamil Translation

பசியால் கதறித் திரியும் தங்கள் கன்றுகளை எண்ணிய எருமைகள் தங்கள் மடியில் சொரியும் பாலைச் சிந்தியபடியே அங்குமிங்கும் செல்கின்றன. அவை சொரிந்த பால் இல்லத்து வாசல்களை சேறாக்குகின்றது. இந்த அளவுக்கு விடாமல் பால் சொரியும் எருமைகளுக்கு சொந்தக்காரனான ஆயனின் தங்கையே! கொட்டுகின்ற பனி எங்கள் தலையில் விழ, உன் வீட்டு தலைவாசலில் நாங்கள் காத்து நிற்கிறோம். சீதையைக் கவர்ந்து சென்ற ராவணனின் மீது கோபம் கொண்டு அவனை அழிக்க ராமாவதாரம் எடுத்த கோமானாகிய அந்த நாராயணனின் பெருமையைப் பாடுகிறோம். நீயோ, இன்னும் பேசாமல் இருக்கிறாய். எல்லா வீடுகளிலும் அனைவரும் எழுந்து விட்ட பிறகும், உனக்கு மட்டும் ஏன் பேருறக்கம்?

English Translation

In Paasuram #12 Andal and her friends are gathered in front of another friend’s house in the cold Margazhi morning. The buffaloes have just been milked and some of the milk has spilt making the path slushy. They are having to brave the cold from above and the slush below by walking on a thin wooden bar.

Andal says, despite all these physical constraints, we are gathered here to sing about Bhagwan Rama bringing back Maa Sita. Across the street everyone is awake and yet you are fast asleep.

This Paasuram is all about persistence in achieving one’s goals – Earthly or Spiritual. Whatever be the constraints, Andal doesn’t give up. So go after your goals with grit and persistence.

Note :

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
