Thirupaavai Paasuram #11

Paasuram #11 like the other Paasurams before seems to be about praising Bhagwan Krishna and waking up one friend after the other. That’s a simplistic view…. every master and mystic who has walked the Earth has spoken about awareness and about how human beings are deep asleep even as they go about their daily business. What they term as awakening is inching closer to enlightenment. Andal is doing the Margazhi Nonbu (fasting ritual) for exactly the same reason.

She has found the path of Bhakti to Moksha and it’s easier for people to understand the limitless universal energy when it takes the form of a beloved – in this case Krishna. Meditating on Krishna’s qualities is far better than spending time in gossip or watching TV (in the modern world’s context).

What a beautiful way of getting everyone onto the spiritual path !

In Paasuram #11 Andal describes Krishna as the one who could milk the cows with their calves around them, the one who is ready to defend you against all enemies and the one who is without a single blemish. This paasuram also subtly shares the benefits of group prayers or the modern word “satsang”.

கற்றுக் கறவைக் கணங்கள் பலகறந்து
செற்றார் திறலழியச் சென்று செருகச் செய்யும்
குற்றமொன்றில்லாத கோவலர் தம் பொற்கொடியே
புற்றரவு அல்குல் புனமயிலே போதராய்
சுற்றத்துத் தோழிமார் எல்லாரும் வந்துநின்
முற்றம் புகுந்து முகில்வண்ணன் பேர்பாட
சிற்றாதே பேசாதே செல்வப்பெண்டாட்டி! நீ
எற்றுக்கு உறங்கும் பொருளேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Tamil Translation

கன்றுகளோடு கூடிய பசுக்களிடமிருந்து பால் கறப்பவனாகவும், தங்களைப் பகைத்தவர்களை எதிர்த்து நின்று போரிடும் தன்மையுடையவனும், மாசுமருவற்றவனுமான கோபாலனை தழுவத் துடிக்கின்ற பொற்கொடியே! புற்றில் இருக்கும் பாம்பின் படத்தைப் போன்ற அல்குலை உடைய மயில் போன்றவளே! நம் சுற்றுப்புறத்திலுள்ள எல்லாத் தோழியரும் உன் வீட்டு வாசலில் வந்து கூடிவிட்டார்கள். அவர்கள் மேகவண்ணனாகிய கண்ணனைப் புகழ்ந்து பாடிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். செல்வத்தையும், பெண்மையையும் புனிதமாய் காப்பவளே! இதையெல்லாம் கேட்டும் அசையாமலும், பேசாமலும் உறங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறாயே! அர்த்தமற்ற இந்த உறக்கத்தினால் உனக்கு என்ன பலன் கிடைக்கப் போகிறது?

English Translation

Paasuram #11 starts with Andal praising her beloved Bhagwan Krishna even as she tries to wake up another friend. She says, all our friends are ready to start the Nonbu, how can you still be asleep ?

One might wonder why Andal is persisting with this business of waking up one friend after the other. It’s important that when one finds the way to Moksha, they share their bliss with others. That’s what masters like Buddha, Mahavira, Guru Nanak, Kabir, Meera and Osho do. These paasurams are Andal’s way of bringing as many people onto the spiritual path as possible. Her style of Satsang.

So much of meaning conveyed so easily through beautiful poems !

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
