How quickly a week goes by ! We are already on the 8th day of Margazhi and Paasuram #8 is here. It’s all about getting people together as a team (modern interpretation). Andal keeps going to each friend’s place and tries to wake them up so that they can join in the Nonbu (fasting ritual). Again Andal shares certain lesser known feats of Bhagwan Krishna in this song.
In Paasuram #8 Andal is trying hard to wake up another friend who seems to be fast asleep. These paasurams are all about team work and how not to leave anyone behind as a leader.

Kizhvaanam Vellendru – Paasuram #8
கீழ்வானம் வெள்ளென்று எருமை சிறுவீடு மேய்வான் பரந்தனகாண் மிக்குள்ள பிள்ளைகளும் போவான் போகின்றாரை போகாமல் காத்துன்னை கூவுவான் வந்துநின்றோம் கோது கலமுடைய பாவாய்! எழுந்திராய் பாடிப் பறைகொண்டு மாவாய் பிளந்தானை மல்லரை மாட்டிய தேவாதி தேவனைச் சென்று நாம் சேவித்தால் ஆஆ என்று ஆராய்ந்து அருளேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.
Tamil Translation
மகிழ்ச்சியை மட்டுமே சொத்தாகக் கொண்ட சிலை போன்று அழகு கொண்ட பெண்ணே! கிழக்கே வெளுத்துவிட்டது. எருமைகள் மேய்ச்சலுக்காக பசும்புல் மைதானங்களில் பரந்து நிற்கின்றன. அநேகமாக, எல்லாப் பெண்களும் நீராடுவதற்காக வந்து சேர்ந்து விட்டார்கள். அவர்கள், உடனே குளிக்கப் போக வேண்டும் என அவசரப்படுத்துகிறார்கள். அவர்களை உனக்காக தடுத்து நிறுத்தி விட்டு, உன்னைக் கூவிக் கூவி அழைக்கிறோம். கேசி என்னும் அரக்கன் குதிரை வடிவில் வந்த போது அதன் வாயைப் பிளந்து கொன்றவனும், கம்சனால் அனுப்பப்பட்ட முஷ்டிகர் உள்ளிட்ட மல்லர்களை வென்றவனும், தேவாதி தேவனுமாகிய ஸ்ரீகிருஷ்ணனை நாம் வணங்கினால், அவன் “ஆஆ என்று அலறிக்கொண்டு நமக்கு அருள் தருவான். பெண்ணே! உடனே கிளம்புவாயாக.
English Translation
In Paasuram #8 Andal is trying to wake up another friend who is still fast asleep. She says the Sun is high up in the sky and the cattle is grazing in the fields. Many of our friends have come near the water bodies to take bath. I am stopping them just so that you can join us as well. Let’s quickly get together and pray to Bhagwan Krishna who killed a demon called Kesi who came disguised as a horse. Andal then mentions how Krishna killed the wrestler called Mushtikar sent by his evil uncle Kamsa.
Some of us maybe wondering why Andal is constantly trying to get everyone together. When you have a project, you need a team. Also it’s important to help each team member excel at his/her job. In the spiritual quest too it’s important to have some companions who are like minded. That’s what Andal is trying to do.
She is also trying not to leave anyone behind. A very important characteristic of a leader ….

Note :
The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
