Thirupaavai Paasuram #14

Paasuram #14 is all about keeping one’s promises ! Andal chides her friend by saying, you had promised to wake us all up, but here we are all awake and you are still asleep. An important lesson for all of us – do not over promise and under deliver.

Ungal Puzhakadai – Paasuram #14

உங்கள் புழக்கடை தோட்டத்து வாவியுள்
செங்கழுநீர் வாய்நெகிழ்ந்து ஆம்பல் வாய் கூம்பின காண்
செங்கல் பொடிக்கூறை வெண்பல் தவத்தவர்
தங்கள் திருக்கோயில் சங்கிடுவான் போதந்தார்
எங்களை முன்னம் எழுப்புவான் வாய்பேசும்
நங்காய்! எழுந்திராய் நாணாதாய் நாவுடையாய்!
சங்கொடு சக்கரம் ஏந்தும் தடக்கையன்
பங்கயக் கண்ணானை பாடலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Tamil Translation

எங்களை முன்னதாகவே வந்து எழுப்புவேன் என்று வீரம் பேசிய பெண்ணே! கொடுத்த வாக்கை மறந்ததற்காக வெட்கப்படாதவளே! உங்கள் வீட்டின் பின்வாசலிலுள்ள தோட்டத்து தடாகத்தில் செங்கழுநீர் மலர்கள் மலர்ந்து விட்டன. ஆம்பல் மலர்கள் தலை கவிழ்ந்தன. காவி உடையணிந்த துறவிகள் தங்கள் வெண்பற்கள் ஒளிவீச கோயில்களை நோக்கி, திருச்சங்கு முழக்கம் செய்வதற்காக சென்று கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர்.ஆனால், பெண்ணே! சங்கும் சக்கரமும் ஏந்திய பலமான கரங்களை உடையவனும், தாமரை போன்ற விரிந்த கண்களையுடையவனுமான கண்ணனைப் பாட இன்னும் நீ எழாமல் இருக்கிறாயே!

English Translation

In Paasuram #14 Andal is chiding her friend saying “you promised to wake us all up, but here we are all ready to start celebrating the Nonbu while you are fast asleep”. The red Lillies (sengazhuneer) have bloomed and the blue Lillies (Ambal flowers) have closed their petals. Sages and saints have started going towards the temple to blow their conches and wake up the Gods. When will you wake up to sing praises of Kannan who is adorned with the conch (Sanghu) and discus (chakra) with lotus petal like eyes !

Andal in the guise of chiding her friend is telling us that we need to keep our word ! If we make a promise we better deliver. In management terms, one shouldn’t over promise and under deliver. A person of integrity will never promise something that they can’t live up to.

Be very watchful and only promise that which you can live upto.

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
