Thirupaavai Paasuram #22

In Paasuram #22 Andal speaks about how our past Karma can be dropped in an instant – all it needs is one glance from Bhagwan Krishna. Essentially, Bhagwan’s anugraha (grace) is all that is required to find Moksha. All that we need to do is become worthy of that grace.

New Insight – On the spiritual path, you need your Guru’s anugraha, and in the Bhakti Marg, you need your Ishta Devta’s anugraha. At work, you need “approvals” and it’s important that we “time” our requests. People jokingly talk about the boss’ mood, but it’s a fact that all of us are open to ideas at certain times, not all the time. So, identify the right time and seek approval. After all, we and our bosses are mere mortals not Bhagwan Krishna who can wipe out all our Karma with a mere glance :).

As always do read Thirupaavai Paasuram #21 before reading Paasuram #22.

English Translation

In Paasuram #22, Andal speaks of how God’s grace works. She says “Krishna, you just need to give us one look and all our sins/mistakes are gone. Basically our past Karma is gone in the instant that one gets enlightened. This is the way the Bhakti Marg works – they are lost in their devotion to their Ishta devta, in Andal’s case its Krishna and if Krishna were to merely look in her direction, she attains Moksha.

Paasuram #22’s literal translation is that several Kings and other important people besides us devotees are all standing here waiting for a glimpse of Bhagwan Krishna. They wait because they know that if you merely looked in their direction, your anugraha (grace) will wipe out all their past Karma.

Do read an earlier blogpost of mine on Karma and Sanatana Dharma.

Note

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
