Thirupaavai Paasuram #21

In Paasuram #21 Andal shares the secret of Hinduism and the Bhakti Marg – Bhagwan Krishna is looking for love not fear. Here is a beautiful quote from the Master of Masters Osho and his discourses on The Gita –

New Insight – Fear doesn’t work as well as love in most situations… At work, fear creates a toxic environment. If you fear your manager, you may do stuff out of fear but without any engagement. Fear that comes out of respect for someone works … that’s fear which will spur you on to doing your best because you don’t want to let down the person whom you respect. 360 degree feedback in organisations helps in understanding whether the manager is creating a toxic culture or a positive one. Strive to create an environment where there is mutual respect, but no fear.

ஏற்ற கலங்கள் எதிர்பொங்கி மீதளிப்ப
மாற்றாதே பால்சொரியும் வள்ளல் பெரும்பசுக்கள்
ஆற்றப் படைத்தான் மகனே! அறிவுறாய்
ஊற்றமுடையாய்! பெரியாய் உலகினில்
தோற்றமாய் நின்ற சுடரே! துயிலெழாய்
மாற்றார் உனக்கு வலிதொலைந்துன் வாசற்கண்
ஆற்றாது வந்துன் அடிபணியு மாபோலே
போற்றியாம் வந்தோம் புகழ்ந்தேலோர் எம்பாவாய்

Tamil Translation

பாத்திரங்கள் நிரம்பி வழியும் வகையில் பாலைச் சுரக்கும் பசுக்களுக்கு உரிமையாளரான நந்தகோபனின் மகனான கண்ணனே! எழுவாயாக. வேதங்களால் போற்றப்படுபவனே! பலசாலியே! வேதங்களாலும் அறிய முடியாத பெரியவனே! உலகிற்கே ஒளிகாட்டும் சுடரே! எழுவாயாக! உன்னை எதிர்த்த அரசர்கள் வலிமையிழந்து, உன் வீட்டு வாசலில் உன் பாதத்தில் விழ காத்துக் கிடப்பது போல, நாங்களும் உன் திருவடியை வணங்குவதற்கு காத்திருக்கிறோம்.

English Translation

This Paasuram is probably the essence of Sanatana Dharma and Hinduism. Andal says “Kings who fear you Krishna, are standing outside waiting to fall at your feet. We, your devotees are also outside, but with hearts overflowing with love like the milk pails at your father Nandagopan’s dairy. Do come outside and give darshan.” There is no place for fear in our relationship with God. It’s deep love that works.

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
