Thirupaavai Paasuram #20

In Paasuram #20 Andal speaks of Bhagwan Krishna’s greatness and says that he comes running when a devotee reaches out to him. I was immediately reminded of a question that a Sannyasin asked Osho – “Is God also searching for me ? Can I just wait for him to find me?”.

The Master’s answer is beautiful and that’s exactly what Andal is doing through the Margazhi nonbu and the Thirupaavai Paasurams.

முப்பத்து மூவர் அமரர்க்கு முன்சென்று
கப்பம் தவிர்க்கும் கலியே! துயிலெழாய்!
செப்பமுடையாய் திறலுடையாய் செற்றார்க்கு
வெப்பம் கொடுக்கும் விமலா! துயிலெழாய்!
செப்பன்ன மென்முலைச் செவ்வாய் சிறுமருங்குல்
நப்பின்னை நங்காய்! திருவே! துயிலெழாய்
உக்கமும் தட்டொளியும் தந்துன் மணாளனை
இப்போதே எம்மை நீராட்டலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Tamil Translation

முப்பத்து மூன்றுகோடி தேவர்களுக்கு எல்லாம் முன்னதாகச் சென்று பக்தர்களின் துயர் துடைக்கும் கலியுக கடவுளே! எழுவாயாக! நேர்மையானவனே! ஆற்றல்மிக்கவனே! பகைவர்களுக்கு பயத்தைக் கொடுக்கும் தூயவனே! எழுவாயாக. பொற்கலசம் போன்ற மென்மையான ஸ்தனங்களும், பவளச் செவ்வாயும், சிற்றிடையும் கொண்ட நப்பின்னை பிராட்டியே! லட்சுமி தாயே! எழுவாயாக. எங்களுக்கு விசிறி, கண்ணாடியுடன், உன் கணவனாகிய கண்ணனையும் தந்து, இப்போதே எங்களை அருள்மழையில் நனையச் செய்வாயாக.

English Translation

In Paasuram #20 Andal describes Bhagwan Krishna’s greatness to Nappinnai, his wife ! She says for Krishna his devotees are more important than the 33 crore Gods and Goddesses. If a devotee calls out to him, he comes running. Actually this is so true … Draupadi called out to Krishna and he immediately saved her from humiliation or Prahlada called out to Vishnu and he came as Narasimha to save his devotee.

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
