Thirupaavai Paasuram #19

In Paasuram #19 Andal continues to entreat with Nappinnai to allow her and her friends to have Bhagwan Krishna’s darshan. This is a beautiful paasuram that speaks to how God belongs to everyone and no one person can hold onto him. Its also shows how human beings become possessive, which is definitely not a quality that helps attain Moksha.

New Insight – We need to find many ways to reach our goals, means matter, but the end matters more … in this Paasuram, we see Andal trying to appeal to Nappinnai, Krishna’s wife to let them get HIS darshan. In an earlier Paasuram, Andal was appealing to the security guards. So use different means to reach your goals. What is Andal’s goal in life? It was to merge with God, attain Moksha. So when your goal is for the universal good, then means don’t matter. The Kurukshetra war is the perfect example of this – when you are re-establishing Dharma, means don’t matter. You need to win. This is a very nuanced concept…. and our Rishis have always been very nuanced.

Bhagwan Krishna is universal love, not the love that mere mortals like us experience. He is the universal energy and no wonder everyone is attracted to him. Osho says this about Krishna –

குத்து விளக்கெரியக் கோட்டுக்கால் கட்டில் மேல்
மெத்தென்ற பஞ்ச சயனத்தின் மேலேறி
கொத்தலர் பூங்குழல் நப்பின்னை கொங்கை மேல்
வைத்துக் கிடந்த மலர்மார்பா! வாய் திறவாய்
மைத்தடங் கண்ணினாய்! நீயுன் மணாளனை
எத்தனை போதும் துயிலெழ ஒட்டாய்காண்
எத்தனை யேலும் பிரிவாற்ற கில்லாயால்
தத்துவமன்று தகவேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Tamil Translation

குத்து விளக்கெரிய, யானைத் தந்தத்தால் ஆன கட்டில் மேல் விரிக்கப்பட்ட பஞ்சு மெத்தையில், விரிந்த பூக்களைச் சூடிய நப்பின்னையின் மார்பில் தலை வைத்து கண் மூடியிருக்கும் மலர் மாலை தரித்த கண்ணனே! நீ எங்களுடன் பேசுவதற்கு வருக. மை பூசிய கண்களை உடைய நப்பின்னையே! நீ உன் கணவனாகிய கண்ணனை எவ்வளவு நேரமானாலும் தூக்கத்தில் இருந்து எழுப்ப மனமின்றி இருக்கிறாய். காரணம், கணநேரம் கூட அவனைப் பிரிந்திருக்கும் சக்தியை இழந்து விட்டாய். இப்படி செய்வது உன் சுபாவத்துக்கு தகுதியாகுமா?

English Translation

In Paasuram #19 Andal continues requesting Nappinnai, Krishna’s wife to allow him to give darshan to her and her friends. Andal describes the way Nappinnai is letting Krishna sleep on a flower strewn bed with a soft mattress because she doesn’t want to let go. Andal says “Mother, we need your help to reach Bhagwan Krishna’s feet. You seem to be wanting to spend every moment with him but shouldn’t you rather be waking him up?”

Essentially the meaning of this Paasuram seems to be – allow everyone into your hearts and hearth because God resides in all of us. Krishna belongs to everyone.

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
