When the USSR collapsed in 1991, and Cuba lost its sugar market, Fidel Castro had to lead Cuba through potential famine. He reduced the dependency on oil by buying 100,000 bicycles from China. As a result, Cubans are reputedly healthier than those in many more developed countries. Fidel has always put state money where it counted most: in education, specifically health and agriculture education, and in health care. We can learn a lot from his example.
