This year the Margazhi month has only 29 days, so we recite the Thirupaavai Paasurams #29 and #30 on the last day of the month. The concluding paasuram has the important message that reciting these 30 paasurams is enough for someone to attain Moksha and to lead a dharmic life.

வங்கக்கடல் கடைந்த மாதவனை கேசவனை
திங்கள் திருமுகத்து சேயிழையார் சென்றிறைஞ்சி
அங்கப் பறைகொண்ட வாற்றை அணி புதுவை
பைங்கமலத் தண்தெரியல் பட்டர்பிரான் கோதை சொன்ன
சங்கத்தமிழ்மாலை முப்பதும் தப்பாமே
இங்குஇப் பரிசுரைப்பார் ஈரிரண்டு மால்வரைத்தோள்
செங்கண் திருமுகத்து செல்வத்திருமாலால்
எங்கும் திருவருள் பெற்று இன்புறுவர் எம்பாவாய்.
Tamil Translation
அலைகள் நிறைந்த பாற்கடலைக் கடைந்த மாதவனும், கேசி என்ற அரக்கனைக் கொன்ற கேசவனுமான கண்ணனை, சந்திரனைப் போன்ற அழகு முகம் கொண்ட அணிகலன் அணிந்த பெண்கள் சிரமப்பட்டு தரிசித்து, பாவை விரத பலன் பெற்ற விபரத்தை ஸ்ரீவில்லிப்புத்தூரில் பிறந்த, குளிர்ந்த தாமரை போன்ற முகத்தையுடைய பெரியாழ்வாரின் பெண்ணான ஆண்டாள், இனிய தமிழில் முப்பது பாடல் பாடி பாமாலை தொடுத்திருக்கிறாள். இதனை படிப்பவர்கள், உயர்ந்த தோள்களை யுடையவனும், அழகிய கண்களைக் கொண்ட திருமுகத்தை உடையவனும், செல்வத்துக்கு அதிபதியுமான திருமாலின் ஆசியுடன் எங்கு சென்றாலும் செல்வச்செழிப்பு பெற்று இன்பமுடன் வாழ்வர்.
English Translation
Paasuram #30 is the last song and it concludes the month of Margazhi. The translation is “Vishnuchittan Kodai, aka Andal wove a garland of 30 lotus flowers (denoting the 30 paasurams) about how young girls of Srivilliputhur with bright moon-like faces went to Bhagwan Krishna and managed to get his blessings. The same Krishna who vanquished Kesha, the asura in the form of a horse and is sweet like Madhu (honey). All those who recite these paasurams with devotion will receive Krishna’s blessings and ample wealth – both material and spiritual, leading them to Moksha.
Well, the month of contemplation and reflection comes to an end with a little more progress towards our spiritual quest. This is the first year I have managed to post about the Paasurams everyday so it is a kind of Nonbu that I undertook. Without Bhagwan Krishna’s blessings this would not have been possible. Hopefully I have interpreted the Thirupaavai correctly for the modern world because they are not just songs praising God. They have a deeper meaning and it’s left to us to interpret them according to our understanding.

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
