Thirupaavai Paasuram #3

Paasuram #3 reminds us about Maha Vishnu’s Vamana Avataram. It’s important to understand how the Vishnu avatars are all connected. His fourth avatar was Narasimha (man-lion) to save Bhakta Prahlada from his asuric father Hiranyakashipu. In Vishnu’s 5th avatar of Vamana (dwarf) he saves the Earth from Mahabali who happens to be Bhakta Prahlada’s grandson !

Important lesson for all of us – we inherit genes across generations :):). So the grandfather might be a saint but the great grandfather might have been a demon and the grandson/grand daughter might turn out to be a demon.

Do read Thirupaavai Paasuram #2 before reading this blogpost. The Paasuram #3 is “Ongi Ulagalantha” which refers to the Vamana Avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu.

New insight – Vamana Avataram is about not going by our first impressions !! Mahabali thought this was a dwarf asking for three steps so no harm in giving into his demands. Only when Mahavishnu crossed the entire universe in three steps did Mahabali understand that he had underestimated the dwarf :). A brilliant lesson in not “assuming” anything and not going with our first impressions. They may/may not be right. Get into details, always.

Paasuram #3 – Ongi Ulagalantha

ஓங்கி உலகளந்த உத்தமன் பேர்பாடி
நாங்கள் நம் பாவைக்குச் சாற்றி நீராடினால்
தீங்கின்றி நாடெல்லாம் திங்கள் மும்மாரி பெய்து
ஓங்கு பெருஞ்செந்நெல் ஊடு கயலுகள
பூங்குவளைப் போதில் பொறிவண்டு கண்படுப்ப
தேங்காதே புக்கிருந்து சீர்த்த முலை பற்றி
வாங்கக் குடம் நிறைக்கும் வள்ளல் பெரும்பசுக்கள்
நீங்காத செல்வம் நிறைந்தேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Tamil Translation

தோழியரே! மகாபலியிடம் மூன்றடி மண் கேட்டு, வாமன அவதாரம் எடுத்த பரந்தாமன், இந்த பிரபஞ்சத்தையே அளந்து தன்னுடையதாக்கிக் கொண்டான். அவனது பெருமை குறித்து பாடவும், பாவைக்கு மலர் சாத்தி வழிபடவும் நீராடக் கிளம்புவோம். இந்த வழிபாட்டால் தேசமெங்கும், மாதம் மும்மாரி பெய்யும். வயல்களில் நெல் செழித்து வளரும். வயலுக்குள் மீன்கள் பாய்ந்தோடி மகிழும். குவளை பூக்களில் புள்ளி வண்டுகள் தேன் குடித்து மயங்கிக் கிடக்கும். பசுக்கள் வாரி வழங்கும் வள்ளலைப் போல, தாராளமாக பால் தரும். அள்ள அள்ளக் குறையாமல் செல்வம் பெருகும்.

English Translation

Andal reminds her friends of how Mahavishnu in his Vamana Avatar asked for just three feet of Earth from Mahabali and finally covered the entire universe in three gigantic steps. Let’s all get together to sing his praises and before doing that go for a bath. When we praise and pray to Bhagwan Vishnu, he will ensure that there is ample rains, a bumper crop and untold prosperity for everyone.

Note –

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
