Thirupaavai Paasuram #24

Through Paasuram #24 Andal recollects a few of the dashavatars and praises Krishna’s courageous deeds. Several stories are referred to in this Paasuram. It’s important to understand that Andal is not just praising Krishna, she is sharing several stories that will help devotees to go forward in their spiritual quest.

New Insight – All our scriptures have beautiful stories, because it’s easier to teach youngsters through stories and the retention is much better. Story telling at work is a recent change and a welcome one at that. There are training programs to help tell powerful stories. Story telling is a very powerful tool to help employees understand the organisational culture, norms and vision. More importantly stories help with employee engagement. Andal shares several stories related to Krishna, to explain different aspects of the spiritual journey. அன்று இவ்வுலகம் அளந்தாய் அடிபோற்றி
சென்றங்கு தென்னிலங்கை செற்றாய் திறல்போற்றி
கொன்றடச்சகடம் உதைத்தாய் புகழ் போற்றி
கன்று குணிலா எறிந்தாய் கழல் போற்றி
குன்று குடையாய் எடுத்தாய் குணம் போற்றி
வென்று பகைகெடுக்கும் நின்கையில் வேல் போற்றி
என்றென்றுன் சேவகமே ஏத்திப் பறைகொள்வான்
இன்று யாம் வந்தோம் இரங்கேலோர் எம்பாவாய்

Tamil Translation

மகாபலி இந்த உலகத்தை கைப்பற்றிய காலத்தில், அதை மூன்றடிகளால் அளந்து உன்னுடையது என்று உணர்த்தியவனே! உன் திருவடிகளுக்கு வணக்கம். ராமாவதாரம் எடுத்த போது, சீதையை மீட்க தெற்கிலுள்ள இலங்கைக்கு சென்று ராவணனை வெற்றி கொண்டவனே! உன் வீரத்துக்கு நமஸ்காரம். சக்கர வடிவில் வந்த சகடன் எனற அசுரனை ஒரே உதையில் வீழ்த்தியவனே! உன் புகழுக்கு வந்தனம்.கன்று வடிவில் வந்த வத்சாசுரனை தடியாகக் கருதி, அவனை விளாமர வடிவில் வந்த கபித்தாசுரன் மீது எறிந்து அழித்தவனே! உன் கால்களில் அணிந்த வீரக்கழலுக்கு மங்களம் உண்டாகட்டும். கோவர்த்தனகிரியை குடையாக்கி ஆயர்குலத்தவரை இந்திரன் அனுப்பிய மழையில் இருந்து காத்தவனே! உன் இரக்க குணத்துக்கு தலை வணங்குகிறோம். பகைவர்கள் எவ்வளவு பலவான்களாயினும் அவர்களை உன் கையிலுள்ள வேலால் அழித்தவனே! அந்த வேலாயுதத்துக்கு நமஸ்காரம். உன் வீரச்செயல்களைப் பாடி, உன்னருளைப் பெறுவதற்கு, இப்போது நாங்கள் வந்துள்ளோம். எங்கள் மீது இரக்கம் காட்ட வேண்டுகிறோம்.

English Translation

Paasuram #24 summarises the Dashavataram of Mahavishnu. Andal speaks of the Vamana Avatar like in Paasuram #3 and Paasuram #17. She also references the Ramavatar of Vishnu and the killing of Ravana. Chakatasura, the asura who comes in the form of a wheel and Vatsasuran who takes the form of a calf are also killed by a young Krishna. The lifting of the Goverdhan hill to save the people of Vrindavan from torrential rains is also mentioned in this paasuram.

While it appears that Andal is praising Bhagwan Krishna for his courageous deeds, she is actually speaking of the different avatars that he takes. Easiest way for us to teach youngsters about our dharma and scriptures is through stories. Each incident in the lives of the dashavatars of Mahavishnu, helps us understand different spiritual concepts.

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
