Negamam Sarees

During our recent trip to Coimbatore, we decided to visit the handloom cluster at Vadambachery. This cluster weaves the stunning Negamam sarees for Cooptex. Almost 15 years back I bought my first Negamam without knowing it was one … unfortunately I ended up getting a power loom saree from Kumaran Stores since I didn’t know better.

Then as I understood handloom and handwoven sarees, I bought My First Handloom Negamam from Cooptex in 2016. Just fell in love with these beautiful cotton sarees, that drape well and have beautiful motifs.

We first went to the Cooptex handloom cluster’s office and met with Mr. Soundappan who is leading this team. The office-cum-showroom has racks full of colourful cotton yarn and several almirahs full of the beautiful Negamam sarees. My cousin Rohini had come along as well and both of us so thrilled as the team showed us one beautiful saree after another.

Rohini and I bought a few sarees and asked Amma to buy at least one for herself. She tried choosing a plain, old style coarse cotton saree, but Rohini and I prevailed upon her ensuring she picked a beautiful saree with checks.

After buying the sarees from the office-cum-showroom, we visited a few weavers at their homes. The first weaver we visited was just taking off a stunning peacock blue saree from the loom. I couldn’t stop myself and bought that saree immediately.

Besides the Peacock blue saree I wore some more of the sarees bought at Vadambachery immediately. I still have a couple that I will take out shortly.

Wearing a handloom saree keeps India’s weaving tradition alive and it’s the most inexpensive artwork that you can own and drape for several years. Do buy the cool Negamam sarees and enjoy the hot summers in them.
