Movie Review – Laapata Ladies

During a coaching conversation, my Coachee mentioned this movie, Laapata Ladies and said it was a very empowering movie. While we couldn’t watch it immediately, we did manage to watch it a couple of days back. What a fantastic movie it is !!!!

Yes Kiran Rao is Aamir Khan’s ex-wife number 2 and yes Aamir Khan made a comment about how she feels unsafe in MODIfied India :). Now that she has managed to direct this delightful movie, I hope she feels safe enough. Probably her safety stopped being an issue the minute she became Aamir Khan’s ex :):):). Read whatever into these lines but expecting me not to share my opinion isn’t happening !!

Laapata Ladies – A Review

Two young brides being taken to their respective in-laws’ places get swapped…. one is lost truly and the other reaches the wrong in-law’s house. The story of how the right bride is reunited with her husband and how attitudes of people in a small village change is what the movie is about.

None of the actors except for Ravi Kishen and Geeta Agrawal Sharma (12th Fail, Life Pass fame) is even known … but they all acted brilliantly. The way the plot unravels is riveting.

The best thing about the movie for us was the fact that we could watch it with my mother and not cringe every time there was a crass/double meaning dialogue. And well, everyone was clothed fully, thank God.

There will be some questions about why Burqa clad women were not used in the movie as the movie explores the theme of women’s identity and empowerment. There is one scene where a shopkeeper waxes eloquently about how a veil hides a woman’s identity and his burqa clad wife comes out to give him tea just then !!! Deepak’s expression says it all…. am happy with that one small scene because that conveyed a lot more than the entire movie.

समझदार को इशारा ही काफी है 🙂

Laapata Ladies movie

My rating – 5/5. Do watch the movie. It’s a very well made, fun movie. You can watch it with any age group. No sleazy scenes, no naked women and no double meaning dialogues. Well done, Kiran.

p.s – Kiran, how did you stay married to Aamir Khan ??

  1. Been meaning to watch this movie since it’s out on OTT ! Kiran Rao is a talented story teller, no doubt. I have enjoyed many of Aamir’s movies too. He is a versatile actor. 👏 Now about his views on India and Modi, the less said the better. At least he does not make a fool of himself in public, like his fellow actor in the South – Kamal Hasan 🤦‍♀️

So these privileged uber-wealthy folks who have always been accompanied by body guards everywhere m, feel “unsafe”! What do they have to say about the safety of Neha Hiremath and the real-life victims of The Kerala Story ??? I guess they say nothing.. so easy to shove reality under the carpet and live within the Bollywood bubble isn’t it?!

    • True ! It’s certainly a Bollywood bubble. Just hoping that some good movies are made instead of the totally tacky ones and the ones glorying the invaders 🤦‍♀️
