Happy Shubhakrita Samvatsara

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year. Today is the start of the Shubhakrita Samvatsara, or Vikram Samvat 2079. I had posted about the Hindu calendar in Vikram Aur Betaal. The name of this year is “Shubhakrita” so we can expect all the good things to happen.

Shubhakrita

So this time we have the Navreh (Kashmiri), Cheti Chand (Sindhi), Gudi Padwa (Maharashtrian), Vaisakhi (Punjabi) and Ugadi (Telugu) today besides the start of Chaitra Navratri. Puthandu and Vishu (TamilNadu and Kerala) will be celebrated on April 14, and April 15 this year.

Vikram Samvat 2079 – Shubhakrita

The Hindu calendar calls the year as “Samvatsara” and we have named each year. Also its repeated every 60 years as the “Samvatsara Cycle” restarts. This is based on Jupiter’s movement from one Rashi to the next and a year is approximately 361 days, four days short of the Solar calendar.

Read more about this on – Samvatsara.

Interestingly look at the names of the Samvatsara’s since 2019 –

2019: was named ‘Vikari’ and it was a difficult year for many people.

2020: was named ‘Sharvari’ meaning darkness and the world was plunged into a pandemic.

2021: named ‘Plava’ meaning ‘to cross over’, and the year did help us cross over to the other shore of the pandemic with vaccines becoming available.

2022: is named ‘Shubhakrita’ meaning prosperity and good luck.

So all of us can look forward to better times and a year of good tidings. Do read my post from last year – हिन्दू नव वर्ष की शुभकामनाएं, Happy Hindu New Year.

I found a fantastic article explaining the Hindu Calendar – WHAT IS SO RIGHT ABOUT THE HINDU CALENDAR?

Happy Shubhakrita Samvatsara, Happy New Year !!
