For many years Krishnan and I have been wanting to visit the Garden of Five Senses, in Saidulajab. Finally we did visit on March 14th this year. The first thought that came to my mind on seeing the flower fest was the song “Baharon Phool Barsao, Mera Mehboob Aaya hai…”. The small park is well maintained and very tastefully manicured.
The Garden of Five Senses is a 20 acre park inaugurated by the then CM of Delhi, (late) Mrs. Sheila Dikshit in 2003. I have said it before and I will say it many times in the future too – Mrs. Sheila Dikshit was the best Chief Minister that Delhi ever had. Her coming to power coincided with our shifting to Delhi from Chennai and we saw the transformation she brought about.
Best times to visit – Feb and March. We missed the annual flower show and the restaurants inside the park are in disrepair. There are a few food carts selling tea and some snacks. We went in the afternoon … maybe not the best time to visit.
The Lovers’ Park
Maybe because we went in the afternoon when “adults” were at work, the park was filled with young couples, most of them students. While we didn’t have any problem with them trying to find a hidden spot for a quick squeeze …. it may be offensive to a lot of people. Delhi Tourism needs to probably bring large groups of tourists to visit the park during the day in winters so that this problem can be resolved.
Despite being in a crowded place with lots of traffic the park is totally quiet and you don’t hear much except birds chirping. Two of your five senses will certainly be stimulated – the sense of sight and the sense of hearing. Can’t say much about touch, taste and smell. Couldn’t figure out if they had flowers that gave out a fragrance. We didn’t touch any of the sculptures though it’s allowed.
Here is a short video that I put together of our visit. Please do subscribe to my You Tube channel for more such videos. Thanks in advance !!
Delhi NCR has lots of parks and we plan on visiting as many as we can….. a plan that has to be implemented more rigorously 😁.
