Boom Boom “Maadu” – Another dying profession

The lockdown is giving many of us an opportunity and the time to do some clean up work. I have been regularly clearing my phone of old photographs and screenshots. While doing that I am finding long lost gems like these three pictures that I have clicked somewhere in Hyderabad in 2016.

In South India, you still find these decorated Ox, with huge horns being brought to houses and people give rice or lentils etc as “daan”. Earlier the handlers of these boom boom “maadu” would be fortune tellers and people would give dry rations to them in exchange for their readings. I have not seen a single boom boom Ox in North India and even in the South, I see them rarely.

This profession is certainly a dying profession … Read more about such professions in this book – Book review – The lost generation .
