We started our 25th long road trip on Nov 28th. Our definition of a long road trip is when we cover more than 2000 Kms. Since we went all the way to Coimbatore, this trip was 2648 kms of driving. More on the trip in a later blogpost, this one is all about Kachoris !
Our first stop was at Kota on the 28th. We took the Delhi – Mumbai expressway till Sawai Madhopur and then state highways till we reached Kota. Our dear friend Prashant had told us to order Kachoris from Ratan Sweet house. Once we checked into the hotel, we immediately ordered Kachoris from Ratan. Confession – they had only dal Kachoris and I don’t like Dal Kachoris, but still wanted to try these.
Piping hot Dal Kachoris arrived within 20 minutes and the first bite ensured we became fans !! I immediately ordered another batch for us to eat on the way to Bhopal the next day.
The Dal Kachori from Ratan –
Yet another confession – our favourite kachoris are from Rawat Misthan Bhandar, Jaipur. Let me write more about Rawat.
Rawat Misthan Bhandar, Jaipur
From the time we ate the first pyaz Kachori at Rawat way back in 1999, no other Kachori has come close to it. When we moved to Gurgaon, a well spent Sunday was driving down to Jaipur for lunch at Santosh Lunch home, buying Kachoris at Rawat (Sindhi Camp Outlet), Lassi at M I Road and returning home late evening.
Many of our friends tried convincing us about other Kachori stores in Jaipur and in all sincerity we did try some of them, but nothing truly comes close to Rawat. If anyone wants to visit, this is the location map – https://maps.app.goo.gl/kgtiLBttTHwwCkVd7.
Not to miss the Pyaz Kachori, we did eat one as soon as we checked into Om Niwas on Feb 5th, on our way back to Gurgaon. We ensured that Hareesh also got to taste it. I might still have the recording of Hareesh’s son Ashwin trying a Pyaz Kachori from Rawat, for the first time way back in 2017 and declaring that it was the best thing he had ever tasted :):). Do read a post from 2017 – The Next Gen.
As always we packed enough of these Kachoris for us to eat over the next few days and for some of our friends in Gurgaon.
Through our road trips we have discovered several of these gems…. and finding the local specialities is a big part of our travel.
Do enjoy the Kachoris from Ratan in Kota and from Rawat in Jaipur whenever you travel to these two cities.
