Reviewing Freida McFadden’s ‘Never Lie’: A Mixed Bag

This is the next book of Freida McFadden that I finished reading last week, but forgot to post a review. Have lost interest in reading more of Freida McFadden’s psychological thrillers … because this one was as far fetched as it could get. I understand its fiction, but certain things seem really odd.

Is it fast paced ? Yes. Is it a good one time read ? Yes. Will it make you read other books that the author has written if this was the first one ? Possibly No. I have so far read six books by Freida McFadden and have found 3 of them gripping and the other 3 just average…

Book Summary – Never Lie

Tricia and Ethan, are out in a snow storm looking for a house to buy. Their real estate agent Judy has promised to meet them at this particular house which is a little out of the way but being sold cheap. Tricia and Ethan manage to reach the address given to them by Judy, find the spare key and enter the house.

As soon as they see the life size portrait of a lady in the living room, they know this house belongs to the famous psychiatrist Dr. Adrienne Hall who had simply disappeared. Tricia initially is spooked and we as the readers are led to believe that she is this fragile young woman, who cannot manage anything on her own. Tricia believes there is someone living in the house as she sees a light go off in the attic and they find fresh food in the refrigerator. Ethan dismisses all of her fears by saying their realtor Judy must have arranged for these things.

Anyway, the storm intensifies and Tricia and Ethan are forced to spend the night in the house. Tricia discovers Dr. Hall’s tapes in a room hidden behind a bookcase. She listens to a few tapes labelled EJ and then to other tapes labelled PL.

Tricia and Ethan are stuck for another day in the house and they manage to capture the squatter !! The squatter turns out to be Dr. Hall’s ex-boyfriend Luke who was suspected of killing her.

The last part of the book is where the mystery becomes bizarre…. Tricia is not who she claims to be. She has murdered in the past. Ethan is not who he claims to be…. both of them end up dealing with Luke and the body of EJ that they find under the floor board in a way that should have got them jail time, but they escape it. In the end they buy the house and raise their family there.

Like I said, some of these things seem far fetched even as I haven’t shared any spoilers.

Read the book if you don’t have a great alternative. My rating 3/5.
