Naming conventions during Ramayana and Mahabharata

#LockdownTales

As we watch re-telecast of Ramayana and Mahabharata, its fascinating to see how the warriors and other important characters are addressed. As I was thinking about it, Kiran KS, made my life easy by posting the following note on his FB timeline.

This is so powerful…. even as we celebrate a few men in modern times who name themselves after their Mothers – Sanjay Leela Bhansali for example, we need to remember that our forefathers were known by their Mother’s name !

It would be very empowering for women in today’s times, if their sons would be known by their name. Girls who get married can choose to keep their last name as their dad’s name but sons taking on their mother’s name would empower women. For getting a passport and registering other important documents like a property deed etc, women have to give their husband’s name or their father’s name…. its time to change that and ask for the Mother or Father’s name with equal weightage being given to both parents. Similarly, ask for the wife’s name if the husband is filling out the form. It will certainly change our society for the better !
