My Saree Today #4 – Andal’s Parrot

Our friend Veni sent us Andal’s Kili (Parrot) Prasadam and it reached us today in the afternoon. It’s amazing that the parrot made of leaves survived the rough handling by couriers without much of protective packing ! So glad that we could get Andal’s Prasadam during Margazhi and as I am writing about Thirupaavai.

The saree today is the first one that I bought from Cooptex after I discovered handlooms in 2016. Do read my blogpost from then – Co-opted by Co-optex !. And don’t miss the grey hair :). This was the phase when I didn’t colour my hair for a year or so. I gave it up and began colouring my hair again as I started “feeling” old and that was something I didn’t like.

This saree has been worn several times. It has been washed at home many times. I will get it dry cleaned once so that it gets refreshed again and I can continue using it.

Since Andal’s parrot came home, I decided to pose with it.

Many people don’t buy handlooms because they feel it’s expensive. But here’s the counter argument – a product whose quality is excellent will be inexpensive in the long run. Amma washes her sarees everyday and she wears handloom cotton sarees. They survive and look good for several years. It’s a struggle to get my mother to let go of these sarees, they are so comfortable to wear.

Do look at Handlooms as an investment and as a way of keeping an art form alive even as you enjoy wearing them.
