One of my cousin’s mother-in-law wore a saree that had parrots woven on it … a really old saree but beautifully maintained. The minute I saw it I wanted one just like it. I found a somewhat similar saree at RmKV Bangalore in 2013. Have worn it multiple times. I love the colour of the saree and the motifs, but am not so sure if it’s pure silk. I get the feeling that it’s mixed yarn :(. The “zari” is definitely not pure.
The challenge with mixed yarn is that during winters, you get static. The feel of the fabric is not great either. Pure silk yarn is a natural fibre and hence the saree keeps you warm in winters and cool in summers. Polyester mixed with silk yarn reduces the price but the feel isn’t good since its synthetic.
I always have a soft corner for black sarees. You can’t go wrong with them.
I hope to get myself a proper handwoven black saree with parrots in different colours someday. I do have a Kora Cotton from Cooptex, that has Parrots in the Pallu. I just realised that I haven’t posted about that one. Will wear it soon and post.
