Today happens to be the World Saree Day and I celebrated it by wearing a beautiful copper sulphate colour blue coloured Negamam saree. We were invited for dinner by our neighbour and Krishnan also decided to wear a similar coloured T.Shirt. So we twinned, in Gen Z’s language. 🙂
If you are wondering why I keep mentioning the copper sulphate blue colour, blame SriDevi and her chiffon saree in Mr. India. Ever since I saw her wear that colour, my wardrobe has always had one saree at least in that colour. Movies do influence and deeply !
The four strand neckpiece that am wearing is from Desh Maheswari, Noida. I just realised it has been a while since I wrote about sarees. Have to first restart my daily blogging habit …. maybe sarees is the way to restart that.
Negamam Saree
Do read more about this saree in my earlier blogpost – Negamam Sarees.
“Negamam is a small village near Pollachi, in Coimbatore District TN, and has a rich weaving tradition. These Soft cotton Sarees are examples of skillful weaving, from weavers who had perfected the art of weaving silks and passed on to generations next. The body of the saree is in fine 80 x 80 cotton, with solid border colours, and the craftsmanship can be seen in the intricate thread weaving of the pallu! They use a double jacquard weaving for the motifs and thread weaving in the pallu! Sometimes, a half-fine Zari will also be used to pep up the Pallu. They are very popular for Office wear and gives the much needed comfort during Summer !!” – Mr. Venkatesh Narasimhan, former MD of Cooptex.
Where to buy handwoven Negamam Sarees ? – Cooptex showrooms have the best collection of Negamam. Incase you are travelling to Coimbatore and would like to buy directly from the weavers, you can do that. The Negamam weaving cluster is near Coimbatore. Online purchases can be made at Cooptex.
Where to buy the neckpiece or something similar ? – Desh Maheshwari, Sab Mall, Noida. If I am not wrong, the stone is called Apatite.
