Winter in Delhi NCR

For nearly two years now, we have missed being in Gurgaon during Winter. It’s our favourite season and we really look forward to it. Delhi NCR changes as Winter sets in. I still remember the first winter in 1997. We didnt have jackets or even enough sweaters as we were still limping through our bankruptcy.

Krishnan and I both fell sick that first winter… but just loved the cold weather. By October we had to wear two layers and by November it was really cold. Ofcourse the first experience of fog was a bit unnerving, but then it had a different benefit – Delhiites become the safest drivers in the world !! The unruly traffic suddenly is orderly because you can’t see beyond your arm’s length.

Over the last fifteen years or so, the fog has lost its charm because it’s a smog now. The stubborn stubble burning by the Punjab farmers, mixed with non-stop construction dust just makes Delhi’s pollution unbearable. Add the constant negative messages on social media, television and nearly everyone falls sick.

Winters in Delhi NCR means fresh vegetables, sarson ka saag with makki ki roti, gajar ka halwa, rewri and gajak, Shakarkandi ki chaat, gajar-gobi-shalgam ka achar, endless cups of adrak wali chai and the colourful woollen caps. What’s not to like ?

We walk everywhere and take the metro for longer distances. The afternoon walks are pleasant, especially when the Sun is out… the early mornings are crisp and cold, evenings are again cold.

Sharing a few pics of the Sunrise that I took over the last few days. They look like paintings to me, not photographs.

  1. To everyone, their own. I keep wondering why you don’t settle down at Coimbatore. Whenever I hear about Delhi’s smoggy winter and terribly hot summer, I, always, was surprised about you love and preference of Delhi. Now I understand about some things that hold you there.
