Thirupaavai Paasuram #5

The Thirupaavai Paasuram #5 is “Mayanai Mannu” …. Till this paasuram Andal is describing the whole process of the Margazhi Nonbu (fasting ritual). It’s important to understand that we do things a little differently when we are working on a project. Think of Nonbu as a project to achieve certain goals. In this case Andal wants everyone to understand the greatness of Bhagwan Vishnu and learn some rules of living through these songs.

Mayanai Mannu – Paasuram #5

மாயனை மன்னு வடமதுரை மைந்தனை
தூய பெருநீர் யமுனைத் துறைவனை
ஆயர் குலத்தினில் தோன்றும் அணிவிளக்கை
தாயைக் குடல்விளக்கம் செய்த தாமோதரனை
தூயோமாய் வந்து நாம் தூமலர்த் தூவித்தொழுது
வாயினால் பாடி மனத்தினால் சிந்திக்க
போய பிழையும் புகுதருவான் நின்றனவும்
தீயினில் தூசாகும் செப்பேலோர் எம்பாவாய்

Tamil Translation

வியப்புக்குரிய செயல்களைச் செய்பவனும், பகவானும், மதுராபுரியில் அவதரித்தவனும், பெருகியோடும் தூய்மையான நீரைக் கொண்ட யமுனை நதிக்கரையில் விளையாடி மகிழ்ந்தவனும், ஆயர்குலத்தில் பிறந்த அழகிய விளக்கு போன்றவனும், தேவகி தாயாரின் வயிற்றுக்கு பெருமை அளித்தவனும், இவனது சேஷ்டை பொறுக்காத யசோதை தாய் இடுப்பில் கயிறைக் கட்ட அது அழுத்தியதால் ஏற்பட்ட தழும்பை உடையவனும் ஆன எங்கள் கண்ணனை, நாங்கள் தூய்மையாக நீராடி, மணம் வீசும் மலர்களுடன் காண புறப்படுவோம். அவனை மனதில் இருத்தி அவன் புகழ் பாடினாலே போதும்! செய்த பாவ பலன்களும், செய்கின்ற பாவ பலன்களும் தீயினில் புகுந்த தூசு போல காணாமல் போய்விடும்.

English Translation

The English translation doesn’t do justice to the poetry of any of the Paasurams, especially Paasuram #5. Andal describes Krishna as the one who does amazing feats, an Avatar of Vishnu who took birth in Mathura. Mathura is on the banks of the holy river Yamuna in whose pure waters, Krishna played and enjoyed himself. Krishna brought fame to his mother Devaki’s womb with his amazing feats. We pray to the Kannan whose pranks were so many that his foster mother Yashoda had to tie him to a drum !! Before beginning our prayers we purify ourselves by taking bath and go looking for sweet smelling flowers. Praying to Krishna burns up all the bad karma from past lives and the current life and they become like dust.

This is not about blind faith … all the attempts are to make the divine accessible because the divine is indeed in you. Also, Hinduism’s focus is on getting out of the cycle of Karma. So everything is done with the idea of “Moksha”.

I may not be doing justice to the meaning and the English translation of these beautiful Paasurams. Will keep attempting to improve my understanding each year. Hopefully I will get the complete meaning and can share them cogently some day.

Note :

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
