Chausath Yogini Temple, Mitaoli

We visited this temple at Mitaoli on Nov 8th when we visited the Breathtaking Bateshwar temple complex. It’s a few kilometres from the Garhi Padhavali temple. Amma did not want to climb the 100 steps as it was quite steep for her. She stayed with the driver and Krishnan and I climbed up along with our guide Nabbu Ji.

We stopped every 10 steps or so because they are quite steep. The steps have been cut from the rocks on the hillock. Do take in the views as you climb up because they are truly stunning.

The entrance to the temple has another 7 or 8 steps to climb. Please leave your footwear outside as this is a temple and not just a tourist spot. As in all the temples, the entrance door is not very tall so bow down as you enter.

The view as soon as you enter the outer circle is stunning. There were a few visitors when we went in so we waited to walk into the central circular courtyard which has the main Shiva temple.

The carvings on the outside wall of the temple are not very detailed. I guess the structure itself is so stunning that the carvings were left off.

We climbed down and decided to eat our first meal of the day at the small ashram at the foothills of the hillock. I had mixed some curd rice from Gwalior and brought along a pack of potato wafers. Amma was very happy and because I didn’t want to eat restaurant food I was ok …. I don’t like curd rice much 😔.

Found puppies sleeping under a bench and one of the trees in the ashram. They were totally unaffected by all the noise that tourists were making. There were a few buses with school children as well. But these cute puppies just raised their head once to check who had come near them and went right back to sleep. A dog’s life is what one needs 😁.

Do visit Mitaoli. Stunning temple and stunning views from the hilltop.
