The NorthEast – Finally A Part of India

For nearly 7 decades after independence the north eastern states of Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Assam were neglected. There was insurgency, broken promises and general apathy from Government of India. No Prime Minister before Modi Ji has taken any active interest in these states !

Note – Am not including Sikkim in the North Eastern states as it has been a very differently managed state compared to the others.

They were treated as a bunch of tribal regions and left to fend for themselves. We would have probably lost Arunachal Pradesh, the land of Rukmini (Bhagwan Krishna’s queen) to China if Modi Ji had not become the Prime Minister in 2014.

We already lost the indigenous culture and the local religion to the conversion mafia.

North Eastern States Post 2014

The BJP’s manifesto for the general elections in 2014 had this to say for the North Eastern states –

"Northeast : Resource rich North-Eastern states are lagging behind in development due to poor governance, systemic corruption and poor delivery of public services. NDA government had initiated concrete steps to address the issue of development of Northeast by setting up the Ministry of North- Eastern Region. We will empower this Ministry with a broader charter and non-lapsable funds for the rapid development of the region.

BJP will:

- put special emphasis on enhancing the connectivity within the region and to the rest of the country.

There will be special emphasis on massive infrastructure development, especially along the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

- address the issue of Flood control in Assam and river water management.

- nurture more job generating opportunities like tourism and IT industry.

- address the issue of infiltration and illegal immigrants in the Northeast region on a priority basis.

This will include clear policy directions and effective control at the ground level.

- complete all pending fencing work along the India-Bangladesh and India-Myanmar border, stepping up border security.

- take measures for the safety of North-Eastern students studying across the country including setting up Hostels for North-Eastern students at various educational centres.

- deal with Insurgent groups with a firm hand.

PM Modi has delivered on every one of these promises !!!!

As a continuation of these promises, a few days back, Nagaland got its second railway station after a gap of more than 119 years. A new facility was commissioned at Shokhuvi.

Am actually sad that in 2022, we are celebrating the second railway line in Nagaland ….. when the rest of the country is so well connected through the railways :(. Just goes to show the extent of neglect by successive governments before 2014.

Hate Modiji but give credit where its due. His policy of looking East and particularly North East is laudable and the execution on his promises is commendable.

Remember the Bogibeel bridge ?

I visited Nagaland in 2004 when Geetu was there…. what an amazing transformation from that time to now.

Hoping that the progress continues and also hoping that the North Eastern people get back to their traditional way of life and reclaim their rightful place in India’s ancient civilization.
