Parrot or Parakeet ? :)

Since August this year, we have had a family of 5 green parrots (or parakeets) making their way to our neighbour’s balcony. They screech across from the tower opposite ours to the tower that’s adjacent and then more recently two of them have started to sit on the air conditioner in our neighbour’s balcony. I have kept green chillies for them on the window sill and they have taken them. Infact one day one of them came and sat looking into our house and saying something in bird language :).

Coincidentally I took a picture on Oct 21st when our dear friends Rajesh, Seema, Swati and Manish had come over for dinner and then again on Dec 21st. The reason I mention Rajesh’s name is because he insists there are no parrots in Gurgaon, only parakeets and well, how can I just accept it ??:):). I couldn’t show the pic taken on Oct 21st to him as we had even more interesting topics to chat about. So now I am posting the pics on the blog and hoping that some bird expert can confirm if these are parrots or parakeets !!

Three of them on the roof facing one side

The same three of them on the roof facing the opposite side 🙂

Two of them on our neighbour’s AC

I think these two have have built a nest here and have babies because they are screeching and shooing away a kite that makes the rounds ! Interestingly one of them has a black and pink ring around its neck while the other one has none. As per wikipedia, the one with the ring is a male and the other one is a female.

Also what else can they be fed ? Corn? Fruits? Please suggest as I have no clue as to what they eat.

  1. How beautiful. What lovely visitors. I had no idea they ate chillies. I did a quick google search and it looks like you have lots of options. The trick will be to find things that they like and an eat that pigeons don’t. Maybe peanuts in the shell? Sunflower seeds?

We have no balcony on our highrise building but we still see birds from time to time. One day, Sage was working on her computer with her back to the window and heard scratching and thought one of our cats was getting up to mischief. Instead it was a large hawk at the window, 40 stories up trying find a way in

In any case, below is what I found:

Parrots are omnivores, which means that they can eat both meat and vegetation. Most parrots eat a diet that contains nuts, flowers, fruit, buds, seeds and insects. Seeds are their favorite food. They have strong jaws that allow them to snap open nutshells to get to the seed that’s inside.

Keas use their longer beaks to dig insects out of the ground for a meal, and kakapos chew on vegetation and drink the juices.

  2. Lovely, parrots for sure.

Parakeets are commonly known as budgies or lovebirds but they are other varieties too, comparatively, they are much smaller in size . omnivores not sure, I had a hand tamed free flight parrot(Not caged) it used to eat non veg as maybe it got used to eat, but it never enjoyed, nicely ripped Tomatoes, Guava (ripped), red chills, almost all types of berries, but I strongly recommend not to try meat as I have seen they loose their feathers due to infection after few weeks.
