Paasuram #18 is all about women empowerment ! Andal reaches out to Nappinnai, who is Krishna’s wife and entreats with her to let them meet Krishna. I guess this paasuram is where the practise of visiting the Thayar’s temple first before visiting Perumal’s temple started.

Unthu Mahakalitran – Paasuram #18
உந்து மதகளிற்றன் ஓடாத தோள்வலியன் நந்தகோபாலன் மருமகளே! நப்பின்னாய் கந்தம் கமழும் குழலி கடை திறவாய் வந்தெங்கும் கோழி அழைத்தன காண் மாதவிப் பந்தல் மேல் பல்கால் குயிலினங்கள் கூவின காண் பந்தார் விரலி! உன் மைத்துனன் பேர்பாட செந்தாமரைக் கையால் சீரார் வளையொலிப்ப வந்து திறவாய் மகிழ்ந்தேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.
Tamil Translation
மதநீர் சிந்தும் யானைகளை உடையவனும், போரில் பின்வாங்காத தோள்வலிமை உடையவனுமான நந்தகோபனின் மருமகளே! நப்பின்னை பிராட்டியே! வாசனை சிந்தும் கூந்தலை உடையவளே! உன் வாசல் கதவைத் திற! கோழிகள் கூவும் ஒலி நாலாபுறத்தில் இருந்தும் கேட்கிறது. குருக்கத்திக் கொடியின் மேல் அமர்ந்து குயில்கள் பாடத் துவங்கி விட்டன. பூப்பந்தைப் போன்ற மென்மையான விரல்களைக் கொண்டவளே! உன் கணவனின் புகழ் பாட நாங்கள் வந்துள்ளோம். அளவுமாறாத உன் அழகிய வளையல்கள் ஒலிக்க, செந்தாமரைக் கையால் உன் வாசல் கவைத் திறந்தால் எங்கள் உள்ளம் மகிழ்ச்சியடையும்.
English Translation
In Paasuram #18 Andal reaches out to Nappinnai, Krishna’s wife. She describes her beauty and grace and requests her to help them reach Krishna.
Always reach out to the Goddess first … she will never let you down. What better way to empower women !! Thayar then takes your requests to Mahavishnu and how can he refuse her ? Remember, even Andal reached out to Thayar first :):).

The 30 paasurams known as Thirupaavai are written by Andal and are a part of the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams (4000 verses singing the praises of Bhagwan Vishnu). For Iyengars, it’s a lifelong mission to memorise the Naalayira Divyaprabhandams and understand their meaning. These songs are written by the 12 Azhwars (saints is the closest translation possible) of whom Andal is the only female.
