The Myth of Multitasking

I make coffee every morning. I use the percolator to make the coffee decoction. The process I follow is, to fill the water in the bottom chamber, put on the filter, keep the percolator on the induction stove at 700 W so that the water warms up before I fill the filter compartment with coffee powder. Then I screw on the upper chamber of the percolator, reduce the heat to 350 W and wait around for the coffee decoction to fill up in the upper chamber.

While I am waiting for the coffee decoction to fill up, I do sundry kitchen jobs like filling water in the bottles, or putting out the vegetables that I need for breakfast or the dosa/idli batter etc.

Multitasking – a myth?

Am a woman, supposedly brilliant at “Multitasking”. I have said so in many training forums. That’s what corporate literature says too ! Applying labels and slotting human beings into “types” is a favourite pastime of many corporate “thinkers”. Sometimes they hit a jackpot and the labels strike gold, but often, its just overhyped.

Multitasking similarly is overhyped. Unless you are Maa Durga with eight functioning hands, you cannot multitask. You can get multiple tasks done at the same time, by delegating, demanding, bullying or begging your co-workers and family members, but as an individual, you can only do one thing well at a time.

Multitasking

What happened to my Morning Coffee ?

Well, I followed my daily process. I filled the water in the bottom chamber, put on the coffee powder filter, kept the percolator on the induction stove at 700 W so that the water warmed up and I filled the filter compartment with coffee powder. Since I am a multitasker, I was filling up the salt container, and bringing out the Bambino vermicelli packet from my pantry cupboard when I heard a loud hiss.

I had forgotten to screw on the top of the percolator !!!!! The super hot water had bubbled up and poured out onto the induction stove from the sides :). I switched off the induction stove, removed a portion of the hot water (the pale brown colour water in the picture), added some cold water and put back the filter and screwed on the top of the percolator before switching the stove on.

Multitasking is indeed a myth ! What we need is the ability to delegate effectively so that it appears as though you are multitasking but you remain focussed on the ONE thing that you are doing at that time.

Enjoy the picture below that I found on Pexels. Buddha in meditation, centered and focussed while all his hands are keeping away the distractions. This is the only way to Multitask :).
